Sacred Hills, Inc. was birthed in the heart of our Founder, Lishala Carter, long before it became an idea and then an actual organization. Sacred Hills, Inc. is named after her family’s land and the long-standing principles that her ancestors and relatives established. She is from a small town in Alabama, named Lincoln. Her family owns land on a hill and that hill has been the center of their family’s existence since freedom and land ownership for African Americans was a thing. She beams explaining how she loved the freedom to roam, explore and simply being a kid on that very hill. She loves hearing the stories her mom, her siblings and cousins tell about their Granny and “The Hill”. When they were younger bartering and community was the most important principle they were taught. It was not me and mine. It was ours and we.

 

That concept of family has faded to some degree but we are hopeful with the emergence of Sacred Hill, Inc. the concept will have a place to live and grow. Her late grandmother, Katherine Thomas, ensured that they understood that even if they weren’t in Lincoln on “The Hill”, the principles and morals were still very much within them.

The establishment of Sacred Hills, Inc. is the birthing of generations of love, hope and humanity coming forth. It is the beginning of reconnecting families through philanthropic efforts. It is the ability to establish safe spaces and healthy interactions even to the vulnerable. This is Sacred Hills, Inc.
